WHAT IS ZUMBA? Zumba is a dance and fitness program that combines elements of Latin American dances, aerobics, and interval training. This exercise program was created in the 1990s by Alberto „Beto“ Perez, a dancer and choreographer from Colombia, and has since gained great popularity worldwide. The main characteristics of Zumba include:
- Dances: Zumba incorporates various Latin American dances such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, and samba. Participants learn simple dance steps and choreography performed to rhythmic music.
- Aerobic Exercise: Zumba is also an aerobic workout that includes dynamic movements like jumps, lunges, and various steps. This helps improve cardiovascular fitness and burn calories.
- Interval Training: Zumba can include interval training, which involves alternating between intense exercises and short rest periods. This promotes increased calorie burning and improved physical fitness.
- Fun: One of the main reasons for Zumba’s popularity is the fun it brings. People can enjoy music and dancing while working out, simultaneously improving their physical fitness.
Zumba can be performed in fitness classes in gyms or studios under the guidance of an instructor, but it can also be done at home using exercise videos. This exercise program is suitable for people of various age groups and fitness levels because participants can adjust the exercise intensity according to their abilities. Zumba is not just an exercise; it’s also a social activity that can help strengthen muscles, improve fitness, and bring joy and fun to the workout routine.
