What effect does sauna bathing have on our body?
Is it better before training, after it, or on a rest day? If your goal is recovery, you should use sauna after exercise or on a rest day. For strength athletes, it’s best to include the sauna before training (as a warm-up) or with a longer break after training. On the other hand, endurance athletes benefit most from visiting the sauna immediately after performance. However, keep in mind that your heart rate should be below 100 beats per minute when entering the sauna.
During each sauna cycle, you sweat out approximately 0.5 liters of fluids, so it’s extremely important to replenish enough water throughout the process; otherwise, dehydration may reduce recovery efficiency. Heat therapy has a positive effect on endurance performance. It helps tired muscles recover faster (by flushing out lactic acid), which can improve overall performance, strengthen the immune system, and increase resistance to stress.
The cooling phase causes vasoconstriction — a narrowing of the blood vessels — achieved through cold or cool water, either by showering, pouring a bucket of water over yourself, or immersing in a cold pool. After completing the sauna cycle, take time to rest in the relaxation area and make sure to rehydrate properly.
How long should you stay in the sauna?
You can go through the whole heat-and-cool cycle about 3 to 5 times. Stay in the sauna for around 10 to 15 minutes — or just as long as it feels good. It’s best to lie down so your whole body warms up evenly.
When should you skip the sauna?
It really depends on your health, but here are some common cases when it’s better to stay out:
-
Heart problems: If you’ve had a recent heart attack, have chest pain, high blood pressure that’s not under control, or a heart rhythm issue — the sauna can put extra stress on your heart.
-
Breathing issues: If you’ve got a bad cold, asthma flare-up, or any lung problems, the hot air can make it worse.
-
Infections: Got a fever or something contagious? Skip the sauna — you’ll only feel worse and risk passing it on to others.
-
Fever: When you’re already running a temperature, the sauna will just heat you up more.
-
Heat sensitivity: If you don’t handle heat well, don’t stay in too long. The same goes for older people, little kids, and pregnant women.
-
Alcohol or drugs: Never drink or take anything before or during your sauna time — it raises the risk of dehydration and other serious problems.
-
Skin issues: If you’ve got rashes, infections, or burns, it’s best to let your skin heal before heading in.
-
Pregnancy: If you’re pregnant, check with your doctor first. Sometimes the sauna isn’t recommended.
